Red-hot Hornets win fifth straight

WINCHESTER -- Shenandoah University ran its baseball winning streak to five games on Monday with an 18-0 whitewash over Penn State-Harrisburg.

The Hornets (8-3) scored two runs in the first inning and four in the second to take a commanding lead over the Lions (0-1).

Junior Greg Van Sickler did most of the damage, driving in six runs on a 2-for-2 day that included a single and a triple in his official at-bats. After driving in one run with his first-inning single and three on his second-inning triple, Van Sickler finished his day with sacrifice flies to center in the fourth and fifth.

The fifth inning was his last as Shenandoah coach Kevin Anderson used 20 field position players and three pitchers in the contest.

The first of those hurlers, senior Jake Yocum, earned the win by allowing two hits and three walks against six strikeouts in six innings.

Mike Smith pitched the seventh before Nicholas Gregg recorded the final six outs.

In addition to Van Sickler's two hits, junior Kevin Brashears was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and senior Scott Van Dusseldorp 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Brashears had a triple and two doubles for his three hits and scored the team's first run.

Every starter got a hit for the Hornets.

Shenandoah is back in action today beginning at 1 p.m. with a non-league doubleheader against Albertus Magnus at Bridgeforth Field.
