Roundup: Falcons rally past Stonewall Jackson

Daily Staff Reports

NEW MARKET -- Central rallied from an early deficit to beat Stonewall Jackson, 9-4, in Shenandoah District baseball action on Tuesday.

The Falcons trailed 3-0 after four innings and were being no-hit by Stonewall Jackson starter Ryan Henschel. In the top of the fifth, the Falcons' offense came to life. Central scored four runs to take the lead and added five more in the fifth.

"We played a little small ball," Central coach Donn Foltz said. "We started getting some hits and we had good execution on bunts. That really got the ball rolling."

Frank Koppa went 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs, and Adam Marston went 1-for-4 with three RBIs for the Falcons (4-8, 3-2 Shenandoah). Seth Bauserman went 1-for-4 with two RBIs for Central.

Eagles 11, Panthers 4

BERRYVILLE -- Clarke County coach Jon Novick knew his team hadn't been hitting the way it should. So on Monday afternoon, he decided he wasn't going to let a little rain get in the way of some much needed batting practice. It paid off in Tuesday's Bull Run District win over Rappahannock County, where the Eagles pounded out 12 hits.

"We were the only team at Clarke County that practiced outside [Monday]," Novick said. "In our last game against Strasburg I think we only had three or four hits, and I just felt that we needed to get outside. The kids stood out in the rain and took their cuts. They bought into it and ultimately I think that is what helped us out [Tuesday]."

Stanley Paice went 3-for-4 with five RBIs, including a home run. Jesse Smoot was 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs, and John Owens also had a home run for the Eagles (6-8, 1-4 Bull Run). Drew Paice pitched a complete-game five-hitter and struck out six for Clarke County.

Gobblers 4, Colonels 2

WINCHESTER -- James Wood gave undefeated a Broadway a fight before falling in a nondistrict contest.

Freshman Addison Barber saw his first varsity action and did a solid job against the Gobblers (12-0). Barber struck out seven and pitched a complete game. Matt Copley went 2-for-3 and Drew Bennett was 2-for-4 for the Colonels (2-11, 1-2 Northwestern). Cody Vorous hit a solo home run and Brock Lockhart had an RBI double for James Wood.

In the second game, Nicewarner was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Tyler Braun-Duin went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs for the Patriots (8-6, 4-1 VACA). But after three more innings, the Eagles pushed across a run in the top of the ninth and Liberty's Zach Morgan made it stand up by shutting down the Warriors in the bottom of the frame for the save.

Zach Carney took the loss in relief for Sherando.

Helen Good went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs and Sam Herndon was 3-for-5 with three RBIs for the Eagles (10-4, 4-1 Bull Run). Ashley Thorpe was 2-for-2 for Clarke County. Sarah Herndon finished the game with a one-hitter and struck out eight in picking up the win.

Hawks 5, Pioneers 3

WINCHESTER -- Skyline kept right on rolling against Northwestern District competition on Tuesday, downing host Millbrook, 5-3, to stay unbeaten in district play.

The Hawks managed just six hits to back starting pitcher Sarah Beamer, but with the help of five Millbrook errors it proved to be more than enough offense.

"We've kind of been scratching by," Hawks coach Richie Armstrong said. "Hopefully we can change that soon."

Leading 2-0 entering the top of the sixth inning, Skyline (10-4, 4-0 Northwestern) produced a three-run rally highlighted by Tommi Michael's run-scoring double. The Pioneers also committed a pair of errors in the inning.

Beamer picked up the complete-game win, fanning 11 while allowing two earned runs.

Julie Shifflett led the Hawks with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate, including a double.

Eagles 4, Warriors 3

The Rams committed three errors in the game, which helped the Mountaineers to two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Madison County's Kaitlin Aylor threw a no-hitter, striking out nine. Katlyn Ayers threw a one-hitter for the Rams (5-9, 2-2 Bull Run). Ayers struck out eight in taking the loss.

The Warriors (7-2-2, 3-0-1 Northwestern) outshot the Eagles, 6-5. Briana Hudnall had one save for Sherando.

"Liberty came out and scored early, and often, and we just didn't have an answer for it," Sherando coach Rob Kilmer said.

Mountaineers 7, Rams 0

MADISON -- Madison County scored four goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half to pull away with a Bull Run District win over Strasburg.

The first-place Mountaineers led only 2-0 at the half.

"It's been a long time coming. It was nice to see things finally flow," Kilmer said. "In our last game, even though we lost to Brentsville, things started clicking. Tonight the kids put it out there and went to town. It was amazing.

"This was the team I thought I was inheriting when I left the girls program. For the first time this season, I think the kids are fired up. And I'm excited."

Chris Barrette had two goals and an assist to lead the Pioneers (2-8-1, 1-4 Northwestern). Cristian Landerverde, John Carnill, Daniel Stillwell and Ryan Runion had a goal and an assist each for Millbrook.

The Pioneers outshot the Hawks, 25-3.

Eagles 2, Panthers 0

WASHINGTON, Va. -- Jon Moya tallied a goal off Ben Marshall's assist to give the Eagles the only score they would need against Rappahannock County on Tuesday in Bull Run District boys soccer action.

Moya's first-half goal was enough, but the Eagles got another when the Panthers scored an own-goal off Clarke County's first-half corner kick.

Goalkeeper Zac Rogers finished with four saves for Clarke County (8-3, 4-1 Bull Run).

Mountaineers 2, Rams 0
