Volunteers needed for World Series

WINCHESTER -- Department of Parks and Recreation officials are calling for volunteers to help operate the Cal Ripken-Babe Ruth 10-year-old World Series to be held next year at Jim Barnett Park.

A "meet and greet" has been scheduled for April 8 at 6:30 p.m., where event committee leaders will be on hand to discuss needs with volunteers.

"We'll have different areas set up at the War Memorial Building ... to match talents and passions with a job," Winchester Parks and Recreation Director Brad Veach said. "There will be something for everybody."

The meeting could be the first of several, Veach said, as Winchester gears up to host hundreds of 10-year-olds and their families for the event.

Other cities have said they needed as many as 200 people to help out, Veach said. Volunteers will be needed for concession sales, ticket sales, field work and a host of other duties.

"We're even looking for local doctors to volunteer a day and stay on site," he said.

Officials are turning their attention to creating marketing materials and securing sponsorships, Veach said. Tickets could be on sale soon, he said.

The World Series will be held Aug. 13-21, 2011.
