Rebels cough up lead, lose in 11th

NEW MARKET -- Covington scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning and another run in the 11th to stage a dramatic come-from-behind 5-4 win over New Market on Friday in Valley League baseball.
"It's tough to lose like this," Rebels manager Corey Paluga said. "I told our guys that when you make five errors and don't execute when you have the opportunity, this is what is going to happen. There are no really weak players in this league, and we need to learn to execute in order to be successful."
With the Rebels leading 4-2 heading into the ninth, the Lumberjacks scored two runs to tie the game as a result of a throwing error by New Market shortstop Kevin Brown on a grounder by Richie Rodriquez.
The Rebels still had a chance to get the win in their half of the ninth when they put runners on second and third with just one out. Covington relief pitcher Ryan Harvey, however, struck out the next two New Market batters to get out of the inning.
The Lumberjacks got the winning run on another New Market fielding miscue. Noah Lynd led off the 11th inning by advancing to first base on a fielding error by Rebels first baseman Franco Ramirez. Lynd eventually scored on a fielder's choice by Rodriquez. A Seton Hall sophomore, Rodriquez finished the night with four of the Lumberjacks' five RBIs.
Covington's late-inning heroics spoiled an excellent performance by Rebels starter William Falasco. The Richmond junior gave up two runs on eight hits while striking out nine and walking only three through eight innings on the mound.
"I thought that was the best performance by a starting pitcher that we've had this year," Paluga said. "Unfortunately, we just couldn't hold it for him."
Harvey got the win for Covington, allowing just two hits and no runs through two innings of relief. Jordan Gomez took the loss in relief for the Rebels.
