Daily Prep Power Rankings

Daily Staff Report - sports@nvdaily.com
The Northern Virginia Daily Sports staff collaborated to create a football top 10 list. Each staffer voted, with 10 points being awarded to the top-ranked team, nine to the No. 2 team and so on. Numbers in parenthesis indicate where each team was last week.

1. Sherando (1) 5-0, 0-0 Northwestern -- The Warriors kept their lock on the top spot with a dominating 59-20 win over Jefferson (W.Va.). Junior tailback Joseph Ojo piled up 254 all-purpose yards and ran for four TDS in the romp in Sherando's final tune-up before opening district action after a bye week.

2. Warren County (3) 4-0, 0-0 Evergreen -- A quick start against a less-than-imposing schedule had the Wildcats looking good early. Shutting down a physical James Wood squad with an imposing ground game led by Gage Steele and Damien Caison vaults the Wildcats over unbeaten Clarke County.

3. Clarke County (2) 5-0, 0-0 Bull Run -- The Eagles drop a spot despite a typically impressive win against host Central. Behind running back Grant Shaw (142 rushing yards, three TDs), Clarke rushed for 216 yards while allowing only 11 on the ground.

4. (tie) James Wood (5) 2-2, 0-0 Northwestern -- The Colonels actually rise a spot despite back-to-back losses, a testament to another tough week for many of the area programs. The Colonels do have a chance to get back on track against a Brentsville squad which delivered Handley's first victory last week.

4. (tie) Skyline (4) 2-2, 0-0 Northwestern -- Turnovers doomed the Hawks in a 40-10 loss at Kettle Run last week, and Skyline only managed 34 rushing yards in an unbalanced offensive effort. The passing game remains potent behind quarterback Derek Helsley and wide receiver Eli McEathron (6 catches for 94 yards and a TD last week).

6. Millbrook (6) 1-3, 0-0 Northwestern -- A heart-breaking 29-28 loss last week to host Fauquier still stings, but the Pioneers have to feel good about a ground game led by running back Jordan Hartman, who tallied 281 rushing yards and three TDs against the Falcons.

7. Handley (8) 1-3, 0-0 Northwestern -- It was a long time, coming, but the Judges broke loose with a 20-point fourth quarter en route to winning their first game of the season at Brentsville last week. Running back Trae Peck tallied 218 rushing yards and added a 51-yard punt return for a TD.

8. Central (7) 1-3, 0-0 Shenandoah -- The Falcons had no answer for Clarke County's ball-control offense last week. Central will aim to even its record against Bull Run District opponents to 2-2 when the Falcons visit George Mason on Friday.

9. Strasburg (9) 2-3, 0-0 Bull Run -- The Rams are enjoying a long-awaited feeling this week -- the pleasure of a winning streak. After beating Luray and Page County in back-to-back weeks, Strasburg has already doubled last season's win total with five regular-season games to go.

10. Stonewall Jackson (10) 0-3, 0-0 Shenandoah -- The Generals have had a week off to regroup after an 0-3 start, and a visit to county rival Strasburg awaits on Friday. The Generals won a hard-fought 21-18 decision last year.
