Central captures cheerleading title

Daily Staff Report

STAUNTON -- Central won its second consecutive Shenandoah District competition cheerleading title on Saturday.

The Falcons had 240 points in the first round of competition, and 241 points in the second round to win the crown. Page County finished second, and Buffalo Gap was third. Stonewall Jackson finished sixth.

The Falcons have only 14 cheerleaders, teams are allowed as many as 20, and coach Carrie Hodges said they have done a good job of overcoming having a smaller squad.

"We have 14 quality cheerleaders," Hodges said. "We have seven seniors. They're a great group of kids to work with. They all get along well, and I think that's been a big key to our success."

Central will move to the Bull Run District next year, and Hodges said it was nice to leave the district on a winning note.

Rebecca Wells was named the Shenandoah District Cheerleader of the Year and was named to the all-district first team. Joining Wells on the first team were teammates Claire Barbour and Laura Raciboski. Central's Christina Crider and Makayla Hosaflook were each named to the second team. Hodges was named the Coach of the Year, but said assistant coach Mahala Hosaflook deserves some of the credit as well.

The Falcons and Generals will compete in the Region B competition at Noon on Nov. 6 at East Rockingham.
