Strasburg wins cheer competition

Daily Staff Report

RICHMOND -- Strasburg won its second Group A cheerleading state title in the last three years on Saturday. The Rams edged out Central for the title.

"It was a great day," Strasburg coach Anne Gorman said. "We went in feeling confident, the girls have been scoring well all season.

"I think it was one of our best performances."

Strasburg finished with 222 in the finals, while Central was second with 211. The Rams had a score of 230 in the first round, while Central was in second with 210.

The Rams had five seniors, and Gorman said they were key to the team's success.

"The seniors were very sentimental, which they haven't been all season," Gorman said. "They were all cyring at the end. It's been a great ride for them. They won two championships and went to states all four years."

Strasburg placed second last year, behind King William. Central was fourth last year, but made great strides this season, led by seven seniors.

"It was the final product of a season of hard work by the team," Central coach Carrie Hodges said. "They've done everything we've asked them to do all season. I'm very, very proud of them."

Both coaches said it was special to have two Shenandoah County schools at the top.
"I'm really proud of Shenandoah County," Gorman said. "To have two really talented teams and finish first and second is good for the county."

Members of Strasburg's varsity cheerleading team are: Amanda Beydler, Brittany Bowers, Taylor Childs, Hannah Clinedinst, Karlet Falkenstein, Brielle Freer, Morgan Moulden, Megan Oertly, Brittany Polk, Kara Richman, Lindsey Rickard, Jordin See, Kennedy Smalls, Toni Stabile, Olivia Stout, Tatyana Stout, Teresa Summerlin and Mandy Vickers.
