Falcons recover from slow start, top Wildcats

WOODSTOCK -- Central started off a little slow in its 66-52 win over Warren County on Tuesday night. However, two freshman gave the team a big lift when they needed it.
Freshman Hayden Basuerman scored 13 points during a Central 17-5 run in the second period to help give the Falcons a 20-point lead. The Wildcats climbed back in the game. After trailing by as many as 24, the Wildcats cut the lead to 50-42 with 4;29 left in the game. Freshman Travis Cooper hit a 3-pointer to help the Falcons pull away for good.
Senior Matt Sherfey led the Falcons (2-1) with 14 points, while Bauserman added 13. Cooper had 12 for the Falcons. Logan Hibbs led the Wildcats (0-2) with 18 points. Nathan Almarode added 12.
Cougars 67, Judges 52
SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. -- Robbie Lawler had 12 points to lead Handley in a non-district loss to Jefferson.
Darion Robinson added 10 points for the Judges, who were playing their first game of the season.
Girls basketball
Warriors 53, Applemen 37
INWOOD, W.Va. -- Morgan Sirbaugh tallied a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds to lead visiting Sherando to a 53-37 victory over Musselman on Tuesday night.
Erin Drumheller also had a big night for the Warriors, tallying 17 points to go along with eight rebounds, five assists and four steals.
Also for Sherando (5-1), Briana Hudnall had added seven points, 12 rebounds and six blocks.
Nicole Henderson scored 14 points to lead Musselman.
Pioneers 99, Vikings 40
PURCELLVILLE -- Courtni Green poured in a game-high 31 points to lead visiting Millbrook to an easy win against Loudoun Valley on Tuesday.
Sara Mead added 20 points and Alisha Mosley had 16 for Millbrook (5-0), which held the Vikings to 10 first-half points en route to building a 43-point lead after two quarters.
Jill Hurtt led Loudoun Valley with 13 points, and Jamie Gutch added 10 in the loss.
Panthers 71, Rams 16
SHENANDOAH -- Strasburg was held scoreless for the first quarter in a non-district loss to Page County.
Katlyn Ayers had nine points to lead the Rams (0-4). Strasburg made only four baskets in the game.
