Hokies' Green to appear at festival

Daily Staff Report - sports@nvdaily.com

Former Millbrook High School standout and current Virginia Tech men's basketball player Erick Green has been added to the slate of featured Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival guests.

Green, who played three seasons (2005-2008) under coach Scott Mankins at Millbrook before transferring to Paul VI High School in Fairfax for his senior season, ranks third on the Pioneers' career scoring list with 1,150 points and second in steals (186). Green, The Northern Virginia Daily's 2008 Boys Basketball Player of the Year, led the Pioneers to a 29-1 record that season, capped by the school's first-ever boys basketball state championship.

After leading Paul VI to a Division I Independent state championship and earning player of the year honors as well as 2009 Reebok All-American accolades, Green was an instant contributor at Virginia Tech.

As a freshman guard, he played in 32 games (one start) and averaged 2.6 points per outing. Green garnered the team's Rookie of the Year honor.

This past season, Green built on that success by starting 26 of 32 games he played in for the Hokies. He averaged 11.6 points per game and had a team-leading 56 steals, as well as ranking second in assists (86). Green earned ACC Player of the Week honors after scoring a career-high 24 points against Maryland, and had 17 points in a victory over then-No. 1 Duke in February.

Green also buried the game-winning basketball for a second-round victory over Florida State in the ACC tournament, helping secure an NIT bid for the Hokies.

Green is scheduled to make a full round of appearances at Festival events, including visits to the Firefighters' Parade, the Wachovia Sports Breakfast and the Grand Feature Parade.
