WINCHESTER -- Visiting Handley rallied from a six-run, first-inning deficit to down Millbrook 9-8 in Northwestern District softball action on Wednesday.
Jody Shipman plated a pair of seventh-inning runs to put the Judges ahead for good. Shipman finished the day with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate with a double and two walks. Chyanna Jones added a pinch-hit single in the seventh for Handley.
Elaine Morgan pitched a complete-game to earn the win for the Judges.
For Millbrook (1-12, 0-4 Northwestern), Krystal Medina was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Kaitlyn Hendershot added a 1-for-3 effort with a walk, an RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored, Rachel Puffenburger was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored, and Maria Anderson had an RBI.
Sherando 9, Hedgesville (W.Va.) 0
HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. -- Sherando pitcher Amanda Lutz fired a five-inning complete game as the Warriors rolled to a 9-0 softball win over Hedgesville (W.Va.) on Wednesday.
Lutz finished with four strikeouts, and had a 2-for-4 day at the plate with a run scored for Sherando (13-1).
Erica Doyle was 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and a run scored for the Warriors. Also for Sherando, Shelby Riley was 3-for-3 with a run scored, Lexi Meeker was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored, and Courtney Reid was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
James Wood 9, Musselman (W.Va.) 0
WINCHESTER -- Erin McCarthy fired a complete-game shutout to lead host James Wood to a 9-0 softball victory over Musselman (W.Va.) on Wednesday.
McCarthy struck out five and walked a pair while allowing four hits in the victory. At the plate, McCarthy was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
Charlotte Viands was 3-for-4 with two RBIs for James Wood (10-2-1). Also for the Colonels, Megan Christian went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, and Kierstyn Peacoe was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.
Central 17, Stonewall Jackson 2
WOODSTOCK -- Host Central needed just five innings to down Shenandoah District rival Stonewall Jackson 17-2 in a mercy rule-shortened softball matchup on Wednesday.
Allie Lockhart had a pair of hits and four RBIs to lead Central (5-6, 3-3 Shenandoah). Makala Viar added two hits (including a double) and three RBIs, Taylor Cooper had two hits and two RBIs, and Katelyn Poston had two hits (including a triple) and an RBI.
Central pitcher Sydney Plum, who had a triple among her two hits and an RBI, earned the win. She struck out six while allowing four hits, two walks and two unearned runs.
Central 83, East Rockingham 73, MMA 2
WOODSTOCK -- Despite losing all three jumping events and the shot put to East Rockingham, Central put forth a strong showing in the running events to edge its young Shenandoah District rival.
Brandon Ritter won both the 110-meter hurdles (16.70) and the 300 hurdles (45.40). Brandon Poff won the 1,600 (4:59.93) and the 3,200 (10:46.24).
Central 115.5, East Rockingham, 16.5, MMA 7
WOODSTOCK -- Central won every event but one in a home tri-meet on Wednesday: The shot put, which was won by East Rockingham's Josie Salcedo.
Central's Lindsey Toothman won four events, including the high jump (4-10) the long jump (14-09.75), the triple jump (31-03) and the 2:53.80.
Heather Landes won the 1,600-meter run (6:25.60) and the 3,200 (14:05.15). And Taylor Hoffman-Orndorff won the 100-meter hurdles (18.60) and the 300-meter hurdles (58.80).
Washington (W.Va.) 6, Sherando 5
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- Despite scoring three runs in the sixth inning to tie the game, Sherando fell to Washington when it gave up a single run in the bottom of the seventh.
Warriors reliever Darrell Thompson took the loss and falls to 1-2 on the season.
Jacob Carney batted 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI, and Dominique Porter had a double and an RBI.
Musselman (W.Va.) 2, James Wood 1
WINCHESTER -- James Wood managed only three hits to support a solid outing by starting pitcher Addison Barber in a 2-1 loss to Musselman (W.Va.) on Wednesday.
Barber fired a complete game, allowing only two earned runs while fanning four batters.
A.J. Eubank, Scott Johnson and Matt Copley had the hits for the Colonels. Frank Minor's sacrifice-fly RBI put James Wood (4-9) ahead in the bottom of the first inning.
Central 5, Stonewall Jackson 4
WOODSTOCK -- Central maximized its offense against Stonewall Jackson, converting five hits into five runs for a 5-4 baseball victory on Wednesday.
"We're still not setting the world on fire with our hitting, but we're coming along slowly," Central coach Donn Foltz said. "Hopefully by playoff time, we'll warm up a bit."
Will Twelawny earned the win with a complete-game effort for Central, allowing 10 hits and four earned runs while fanning four batters.
Offensively, Kohly Hawkins plated a pair of runs by reaching on an error. Adam Marston added a hit and an RBI for Central (4-6, 3-3 Shenandoah).
