MILLINGTON, Tenn. -- No. 3/4 Shenandoah University earned its second straight win of the Millington Regional with a 14-5 victory over Piedmont on Thursday evening.
The Hornets (36-5) advance to tonight's 8 p.m. game against the winner of the Webster (Mo.)/Piedmont game, which will take place at noon today.
The Gorlocks/Lions game is an elimination contest for both teams. Webster, which sent top-seed Christopher Newport into the loser's bracket, lost 10-1 earlier Thursday to Salisbury.
Senior Bobby Stefanowicz (2-0), who came on for classmate Brian Goddard in the middle of the fourth, allowed just one hit in 32⁄3 innings of work to earn the victory on the mound. Stefanowicz struck out four and walked two before Jeff Stanek came on to start the eighth.
A third senior, Greg Van Sickler, got the victors started in the top of the first by driving in classmate (and fellow All-American) Kevin Brashears with a double down the leftfield line.
One inning later, Shenandoah got all of the offense it would need for the rest of the evening by getting a Joey Donofrio RBI single before Cory Nelson hit a grand slam to left.
Nelson's dinger was one of two SU hit on the night. Donofrio started a seven-run sixth with a solo shot.
SU banged out 13 hits against three PC (32-14) pitchers with eight of nine starters getting at least one hit. Donofrio, Mike Smith, Clint DeHaven and Kurt Krout all had at least two hits.
