Girls basketball power rankings 1-17-12

Daily Staff Report - sports@nvdaily.com

The Northern Virginia Daily sports staff collaborated to create a top 10 girls basketball list. Each staffer voted, with 10 points being awarded to the top-ranked team, nine to the No. 2 team and so on.

1. Millbrook (1) 16-0, 3-0 Northwestern -- Millbrook won three more games last week to extend its winning streak to 66 games. The Pioneers won their three games by an average of 50.3 points.

2. Stonewall Jackson (2) 11-3, 5-3 Shenandoah -- Stonewall Jackson bounced back from a tough to Stuarts Draft with a solid four-point win over Wilson Memorial. Ashlie Clar had 26 points and five assists in the win over the Green Hornets last week.

3. Sherando (3) 10-4, 2-1 Northwestern -- The Warriors got trounced by Millbrook, but responded with an impressive win over Skyline late in the week. Sherando has three games this week, including a nondistrict contest with Martinsburg (W.Va.).

4. Handley (5) 9-3, 1-1 Northwestern -- Handley suffered a tough overtime loss to Woodgrove, which is currently ranked No. 4 in the AP prep poll. The Judges had two strong wins over Skyline and Kettle Run.

5. Skyline (4) 10-4, 0-2 Northwestern -- The Hawks went 0-2 last week with losses to Handley and Sherando. Skyline's Oshene Kelly suffered an injury in the loss to Handley and is likely out for the year.

6. James Wood (6) 7-6, 0-2 Northwestern -- The Colonels' up and down season continued as they beat Fauquier, but then lost by 75 points to Millbrook. The Colonels had trouble putting points on the board in the loss to the Pioneers, and late in the first half had only point on the scoreboard.

7. Central (8) 6-9, 2-5 Bull Run -- An injury to senior Rebecca Sigler has the Falcons down to only seven players. However, that did not slow the Falcons down last week as they won two games by a combined 86 points.

8. Clarke County (10) 4-10, 4-3 Bull Run -- The Eagles doubled their season win total with two impressive victories last week. They held off a late run by Strasburg, then topped Madison County to create a three-way tie for third in the district.

9. Strasburg (7) 5-9, 2-5 Bull Run -- Strasburg went 0-2 on the week. The Rams lost a close contest with Clarke County, but then were dominated by Central.

10. Warren County (9) 4-8, 1-1 Evergreen -- The Wildcats started their Evergreen District season off well with a win over Kettle Run. However, defending state champion Liberty was too much for them. Warren County has key district games with Fauquier and Brentsville this week.
