STANARDSVILLE -- Clarke County's determined second-half rally fell just short against Bull Run District rival William Monroe on Thursday, as the Eagles dropped a 55-53 decision in girls basketball action.
Trailing 33-21 at halftime, Clarke County (6-13, 5-6 Bull Run) cut into the deficit in the third quarter and had enough left for one last charge in the fourth. The Eagles tied the game at 51-all on Anna-Blue Catlett's 3-pointer, but William Monroe essentially won the game at the free-throw line from there.
Catlett finished with 17 points to lead Clarke County. Ammie Levi added 11 points, six rebounds and a pair of steals, and Sydney Chrane had 10 points, six rebounds and two steals. Also for the Eagles, Brittany Teasley chipped in with six assists and a pair of steals.
Alex Cave led the Dragons with 15 points, and Alexis Smith added 12 in the win.
George Mason 52, Strasburg 33
STRASBURG -- Visiting George Mason dashed out to a sizable first-quarter lead and stayed out front the rest of the way against Strasburg on Thursday.
The Mustangs led 23-8 after the first period, and outscored the Rams in both the second and third quarters before the Rams narrowed the gap in the final eight minutes.
Katlyn Ayers had 13 points to lead Strasburg (7-11, 3-7 Bull Run). Brandy Clem added seven rebounds for the Rams.
Stephanie Cheney finished with 12 points for George Mason (15-4, 10-1 Bull Run).
