SU roundup: Former SU star inks NFL deal

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Former Shenandoah University football standout Rico Wallace has signed an NFL free agent contract with the Carolina Panthers.

Wallace, the all-time leading receiver in Shenandoah University history, went undrafted in the annual seven-round NFL draft that concluded on Saturday.

As a senior at SU, Wallace had 67 receptions for 1241 yards and 14 touchdowns. He was named first team All-USA South and as an All-America by two different publications.

After participating in a number of combines, the last at James Madison University in March, Wallace received significant interest from two NFL clubs as a late-round/undrafted free agent selection from two different NFL teams.

Wallace will take part in the team's rookie mini-camp May 11 through May 13.

Pope earns CSAC honors

ASTON, Pa. -- Junior midfielder Bryan Pope has been named to the CSAC Honorable Mention team for men's lacrosse in selections announced Monday by the league.

Pope led the Hornets this season with 30 goals and five assists for 35 points.

In addition to his 30 goals topping the squad, he was second in groundballs with 39 and third among midfielders with six caused turnovers.

Pope led SU with four extra-man goals.

Pope is joined on the All-CSAC team by senior Kyle Startsman. Statsman, a close defenseman, was the Hornets' representative to the All-Sportsmanship squad.

Startsman started all 13 games he played in with 20 groundballs and 13 caused turnovers.

It is the first CSAC honor for both men.
