While many in the area get excited over the Apple Blossom Festival, I can guarantee that I am not one of them. However, I do get excited knowing that it's Festival week, because that means the spring playoffs will soon be here.
There are only a couple of weeks left in the regular season and the district races are heating up in all of the sports around the area.
In the Bull Run District, William Monroe has a good stranglehold on the baseball district title. The Dragons, who won the Group AA Jefferson District last year, have a three-game lead with only five games left.
Strasburg has a one-game lead over Clarke County for second, but lost to the Eagles in their only meeting of the season. The Rams and Eagles play again on May 8. Central is only 2-8 in the Bull Run, but the Falcons are coming off a big win over Clarke County last week.
Stonewall Jackson has also struggled this season, but the Generals' two wins have both been no-hitters. They also lost a very close game with first-place East Rockingham last week in Shenandoah District play.
Warren County is in third place in the Evergreen District. They trail second-place Liberty by a half-game, but have defeated the Eagles in their only meeting this season. Kettle Run leads the district and is 6-0.
On Tuesday night, Sherando edged Millbrook to clinch first place in the Northwestern District in baseball. The Warriors are up two games in the district standings with two left to play.
Skyline is 4-5 in the district and sitting in third place, with James Wood a game back. The Hawks have beaten the Colonels twice this season.
In softball, Clarke County is in control of its own destiny in the Bull Run District. The Eagles survived a scare from third-place Central last week, but are still undefeated. Madison County is in second place, two games back with four games left. The Eagles have already defeated the Mountaineers twice this year. Central is tied with William Monroe for third, but beat the Dragons in their only meeting so far this year. Strasburg is tied for fifth in the district, but did give Central a tough battle on April 20.
The Generals have had a tough time most of the season, but have had some positives to draw from. They played Strasburg close both times they played them, and last week they picked up their first district win of the season. The Generals beat Buffalo Gap, 11-10.
Warren County has one of the best teams in the area. Unfortunately for them, they are also in one of the toughest districts around. The Wildcats are in fourth place with a 2-3 record, but all three losses have been close games.
In the Northwestern District, Skyline is 8-1 and has a two-game lead on second-place James Wood. The Hawks split their two meetings with the Colonels this season, and have three district games left. Sherando is tied for third place with four district losses, but has won both of their meetings with James Wood.
In boys soccer, Clarke County, George Mason and Manassas Park are all tied for first in the Bull Run District at 8-1. Central is in fifth, a game behind fourth-place Rappahannock County. The two teams tied in their previous meeting, and they play again today. Strasburg is still searching for its first win of the district season, but has played some really close games this year.
In the Shenandoah District, the Generals are undefeated and have clinched the regular-season title, with Stuarts Draft (5-1-4) and Riverheads (7-3-1) behind them.
Warren County is in the thick of things in the Evergreen, and beat both Kettle Run and Liberty this season.
Sherando is in first place in the Northwestern District. The Warriors are 5-6 on the season, but they have lost only once in the district. They split their two meetings with second-place James Wood. Skyline has struggled and is still winless on the season.
In girls soccer, Clarke County is off to a sizzling start and is undefeated in the Bull Run. Central and Strasburg have had tough seasons, with the Falcons and Rams combining for just two district wins.
Stonewall Jackson is having a very good season in the Shenandoah. The Generals are 5-3-1 in the district, and are in third place.
Warren County is having a very good year, led by sophomore Kelsea Potts. However, the Wildcats are in a really strong district and are still searching for their first district victory.
Millbrook is in first place in the Northwestern District. Sherando is in third place in the district, but has played everyone tough. Skyline has only one win, which came against Sherando.
There's still a lot of games left to be played in the district season, but there's no question a lot of our teams have the potential to do some great things in the postseason.
