R-MA's Fleming wins two state titles

Randolph-Macon Academy's Alexandra Fleming brought home two state championships at Saturday's Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) state track and field meet in Richmond.
Fleming's first-place finishes in the 100- and 200-meter dash, plus a sixth-place finish in the long jump, single-handedly lifted the Yellow Jackets to an eighth-place team finish with 23 points.
Fleming posted a blistering time of 12.88 seconds in the 100 preliminaries, then clocked a winning time of 13.04 in the finals for the championship.
Fleming was also faster in the 200 preliminaries with a time of 26.59, but came through in the finals to win in 26.78.
In the long jump, Fleming was sixth with a distance of 15 feet, 9 inches.
Massanutten Military Academy's Selah Applin finished 22nd in the 100 preliminaries with a time of 14.25 seconds.
In the boys meet, none of the area participants scored with top-eight finishes.
MMA's Kenya Ray was 21st in the 100 (11.97 seconds), R-MA's Thomas Shea was 22nd in the 3,200 (11:25.50) and teammate Thomas Powars was 24th (11:33.07), and MMA's Richard Manning was 22nd in the discus (95-05).
Fork Union Military Academy won the boys competition with 195.5 points, and St. Catherine's School won the girls championship with 165 points.
