Rising Stars 8th grade team comes up short in tournament

The Winchester Rising Stars 8th grade Amateur Athletic Union girls basketball team came up short in their quest to win a national championship in the tournament held at Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

The Rising Stars participated in the tournament at the ESPN Wide World of Sport Complex at the Walt Disney World Resort from Tuesday-Sunday of this past week.

The Rising Stars went 3-3 in the tournament, and were one of the final 16 teams in the event.

The Rising Stars lost their first game in pool play to the Georgia Scholar Shots, 33-28. They rebounded from the loss by defeating the Michigan Mystics, 51-19 and the Alabama Twisters Elite, 50-31, to win the pool.

In the championship bracket, they beat Missouri Valley's Running Angels Red, 38-37. The Rising Stars then lost to Louisiana's Ponchatoula Hurricanes, 51-45. The Rising Stars then played in the third round consolation bracket where they lost 57-32 to Indiana's Hoosier Elite-Reinoehl. The tournament was won by the Boston Showstoppers.

The Rising Stars team consisted of players headed to five different high schools in the region this year.
