SU roundup: Oliver promoted to full-time football assistant

Daily Staff Report - sports@nvdaily.com

Shenandoah University head football coach Paul Barnes announced Monday that he has promoted assistant coach Kalvin Oliver into a full-time position.

Oliver, who has been on staff since graduating from SU in 2004, takes the full-time spot previously held by Tyrone Bell.

Bell resigned last month to accept a head coaching position at a high school in southern Maryland.

The Hornets have four full-time assistants: defensive coordinator Brock McCullough, offensive coordinator Brian Wolf, offensive line coach Joe Jacoby and now Oliver.

Bell was on Barnes' staff for four seasons and had primary responsibility on the defensive side of the ball in addition to working with the special teams.

Oliver, a four-year starter at defensive end for Shenandoah from 2000-03, played in 39 games with 53 solo and 39 assisted tackles, including 28 for loss and 11 sacks.

Oliver is still eighth all-time in sacks.

Following his graduation, Oliver joined the staff as a defensive line coach. He is the longest tenured assistant on Barnes staff.

"When Tyrone came to me and told me that leaving for a head coaching opportunity was a possibility, I immediately thought about Kalvin as a potential replacement," Barnes said in a news release. "Kalvin is an excellent teacher of the game and has done a tremendous job coaching our defensive linemen.

"We are going to miss 'T' - he was great for us in a bunch of roles -- but I am very confident that Kalvin will flourish as a full-time football coach."

Oliver has been physical education teacher in the Frederick County (Va.) School District since his 2004 graduation. He will give up that position to come to Shenandoah.

SU opens the 2012 season, its first in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, on Sept. 1 at Stevenson University.
