VBL roundup: Woodstock grabs 1-0 series lead

Visiting Woodstock registers the first upset of the 2012 Valley Baseball League playoffs with an 11-5 victory over Haymarket on Friday night.

The River Bandits are now in position to clinch at home -- they host the Senators tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Woodstock.

Woodstock scored in every inning except the fourth, plating single runs in the first, second, third, seventh and eighth innings along with three in the sixth and two in the ninth.

The River Bandits had 17 hits in scoring those 11 runs, with seven of nine starters posting at least one hit each and Nick Walker leading a group of five players with multiple hits by going 4 for 6 with two RBIs.

Tyler Mims also had a good night with three hits and three RBIs in six at-bats.

Ford Stainback had three hits for the Senators, who also received two RBIs each from Keenan Cook and Larry Balkwill.

Waynesboro 6, New Market 2

Overall No. 1 seed Waynesboro got its playoff run started on a good note with a 6-2 home victory over New Market on Friday.

The Generals will attempt to complete the series sweep with a victory tonight in the 7:30 p.m. contest at Rebel Park in New Market.

After the two teams traded single runs in the first, Waynesboro took a lead it would not relinquish with two runs in the second.

Julian Ridings, who won the league batting title with a .419 average, had what proved to be the game-winning RBI on a two-run single to right.

The Rebels answered with a single run in the third before Waynesboro scored once in the fourth and twice in the eighth to pull away.

Seth Lucio (5-2) tossed the opening 5 2/3 innings to post the victory. He allowed two runs (both unearned) on six hits and four walks.

Lucio struck out five.

Brandon Murray had four hits and Ridings three for the victors.

Matt Dickason and Justin Lacy both had two hits, with Lacy also driving in two runs, for New Market.
