SU roundup: Hornets tabbed seventh in field hockey

Daily Staff Report - sports@nvdaily.com

Shenandoah University is picked seventh in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference preseason field hockey poll released Wednesday morning by the league office.

SU finished 5-13 and 1-7 last fall in its inaugural ODAC campaign; the Hornets downed Sweet Briar 4-0 on Oct. 22 for their first-ever ODAC victory.

Coach Kim Iman-Bianchi's team lost to three teams: Washington and Lee, Bridgewater and Virginia Wesleyan, in overtime last season.

Those three squads are the Nos. 4-6 picks in the league race this season.

Shenandoah has 24 points in the poll to edge Roanoke for the seventh-place spot.

Lynchburg, the defending league champ, earned eight of nine first-place votes and 64 points to top the poll.

Randolph-Macon had the remaining first place vote and 56 points to come in 11 points in front of No. 3 Eastern Mennonite.

SU opens its season Friday afternoon at Wilson College.

Volleyball

The Shenandoah women's volleyball team is the preseason No. 8 selection of the ODAC coaches in poll results released Wednesday morning by the league office.

Shenandoah won a program-record 18 matches last season in its final year in the USA South and has 40 points in its inaugural ODAC poll.

That puts SU just ahead of Randolph and Roanoke, which tied for ninth with 38 points each.

Randolph-Macon, the defending league champ, earned the preseason favorite spot with 118 points and eight of the 12 first place votes.

Washington and Lee had 113 points and three first-place votes to nab the No. 2 position, with Lynchburg being picked third on the strength of 101 points and the final first-place vote.

The Hornets travel to Hood College on Saturday for a season opening tri-match against Valley Forge Christian and the host Blazers.
