BRIDGEWATER -- Shenandoah University's football team endured a disappointing debut as a member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference when host Bridgewater edged the Hornets 17-14 on Saturday at Jopson Field.
Shenandoah (1-3, 0-1 ODAC) pulled even at 14-14 on Corey Taylor's 1-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter. That touchdown was set up by Brandon Martin's interception and return to the Bridgewater 3-yard line.
Later in the fourth, the Eagles started a drive in prime position at the Shenandoah 25 after a 23-yard punt return by Antonn Briley, and five plays later John Griggs hit the eventual game-winning 33-yard field goal.
Smith, a sophomore making his first career collegiate start, scored two rushing touchdowns on the day for the Hornets.
SU's defense held the Eagles to just 55 rushing yards on 40 attempts, but Bridgewater quarterback Willie Logan tallied 261 passing yards and two touchdowns.
