Shenandoah roundup: Hornets win in women's soccer

The Shenandoah University women's soccer team was dominant in all phases of the game in a 5-0 non-league win over Hood College Sunday afternoon.

Shenandoah (2-3) held the Blazers (1-3) without a shot or a corner kick while seeing seven different women put their name on the scoresheet.

Freshman Danielle Burris had what proved to be the game-winner when she redirected a rebound of a Sarah Hensley shot in for the first goal of the contest.

Hensley's attempt glanced off the crossbar right to Burris, who slid the shot home in the 17th minute.

This would be the lone goal of the first half despite SU pelting Blazers goalkeeper Leah Norris with 21 shots.

Norris split her 12 saves equally in the two halves.

After Burris set up sophomore Courtney Boschert with an insurance tally, SU scored three goals in a 16-minute span late in the second.

Burris had the first, in the 70th minute, with Harmon Hall following her 30 seconds later. Catherine Major then closed the book with a 40-yard blast in the 86th minute.

Shenandoah had 34 shots and nine corners.

Golf
The Shenandoah University golf team stands second after day one of its own invitational thanks to a collective 323.

Playing the first of two rounds at the par 72, 6806 yard Winchester Country Club layout, the Hornets stand tied with fellow ODAC member Virginia Wesleyan at 323.

RandolphRandolph-Macon, another ODAC school, leads the five-team tournament with a 305.

The Yellow Jackets had all four of their qualifying golfers at 78 (six-over-par) or better.
Apprentice, which shot a 330 to find itself in fourth place, has co-medalist Ben Hunter as its low man. Hunter, along with John Dozier from VWC, both carded one-over-par 73s.
John Judy had a three-over-par 75 to lead SU.

The Hornets 'B' team rounds out the five-team field at 346. Ryan Parker led this group with an 82.

Women's field hockey
Shenandoah University saw its three-game women's field hockey winning streak come to an end Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 non-league loss to No. 17 Christopher Newport University.

CNU (3-1) dominated the first half of play, taking all 10 shots, before SU turned the tables following intermission.

Shenandoah (3-2) took four of the first five shots of the second half and held a 5-4 second half advantage in penalty corners to put the pressure on the Captains.

In the 45th minute, that pressure paid off as freshman Alexandra Darrow found classmate Kelani Bailey on the doorstep for the hosts initial goal of the contest.

Now back in the game, SU continued to press the action but was unable to bring the contest back to level.

Christopher Newport held an 18-4 advantage in shots and 12-5 in penalty corners.

Sarah Clare had nine stops, including six in the second half, for Shenandoah.

The Hornets host Notre Dame (Md.) on Wednesday night at 7 in a non-league matchup.

Men's soccer
Shenandoah University matched its men's soccer win total from 2011 by shutting out Marymount University 3-0 Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets (2-3) got all of the offense they would need on a John Peterman goal in the 26th minute.

Peterman then helped SU pull away from the Saints (1-2-1) with another unassisted goal, this one just 20 seconds into the second half.

Eduardo Santiago closed the book on the day's scoring with his unassisted goal at 69:46.
Marymount outshot Shenandoah 23-10, but Hornets keeper James Dutcher continued his outstanding week with a 12-save shutout.

In two games at the Virginia Wesleyan Tournament this weekend, Dutcher made 29 saves.
MU also had all four corner kicks awarded on the night.

Volleyball
The Shenandoah University women's volleyball team completed its second straight perfect week by sweeping a tri-match at Gwynedd-Mercy with Alvernia and the host Griffins.

Shenandoah (6-0) swept both matches, taking out Alvernia (2-5) 19, 19 and 18 in the opening game before completing the sweep with a 15, 19, 19 victory over Gwynedd-Mercy (0-4) in the final match of the day.

Senior Mary Harshman paced SU in the opening match with nine kills while James Wood graduate Haley Smith and Samantha Schambach both added seven.

Kelcy Brown and Millbrook graduate Blake Parkes chipped in 19 assists each.

Defensively, sophomore Nicole Mueller had eight digs.

In the nightcap, Rachel Gross had four kills with Smith and SVCA graduate Allie Pieper backing her up with three each.

The Griffins gave Shenandoah 16 points on errors and the Hornets were dominant at the service line with 17 aces.

Parkes had six aces and Mueller three.
