JMU roundup: Dukes tie nationally-ranked ODU
Daily Staff Reports - sports@nvdaily.com NORFOLK -- Behind a career-high nine saves by redshirt junior goalkeeper Colin Newcity, the James Madison men's soccer team battled nationally-ranked Old Dominion to a scoreless overtime tie Wednesday evening. ODU entered the game ranked 12th by Soccer America and 11th in the NSCAA coaches poll. JMU improved its record to 4-4-2 overall and 2-0-1 in league play. The Dukes are the only CAA team without a loss in league action. ODU's record now stands at 7-1-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the CAA. The Monarchs extended their home unbeaten streak to 14 games (12-0-2). ODU came into the match averaging just over three goals per game and ranked fifth in NCAA Division I in total goals this season. The Monarchs were shut out for the first time this year. Newcity's saves included a stop with 18 seconds left in the second overtime on a shot by Tim Hopkinson, who leads the CAA and ranks third in the NCAA in scoring. ODU held a 22-12 advantage on shots for the game, but JMU out-shot the Monarchs 4-0 in the first 10-minute overtime and 6-2 over both overtime periods.
