Good plays in Group A state tournament

By Tommy Keeler Jr.

Andrew Good's first Group A state appearance was wet, and not quite what he hoped for.

The Stonewall Jackson junior shot a two-day 127 over 27 holes at the Group A state golf tournament at Lonesome Pines Country Club in Big Stone Gap on Monday and Tuesday.

"He did OK," Stonewall Jackson coach Roger Wilkins said. "It was awesome. He had a great time."

Monday's round was shortened to nine holes due to rain. Good shot a 42, which was 6-over par. Wilkins said Good bogeyed the first six holes, and then parred the final three holes.

On Tuesday, Wilkins said Good started out on the back nine and bogeyed the first five holes, and ended up at +8 after his first nine holes. On the front nine Good parred the first five holes, but was five-over on the final three holes. Wilkins said he actually shot an 84, but it was incorrectly scored an 85 and he signed it, so it officially went down as an 85.

"He did the best he could," Wilkins said. "He didn't get any breaks. It was a hard 84. He didn't have many short putts."

William Monroe won the state tournament. Galax's John Bryant won the individual state title by shooting a 104 (34-70). Buffalo Gap's Nate Hildebrand shot a 118 (41-77) and finished tied for sixth overall.

Wilkins said Good's 127 put him in the top 30 overall. Good helped guide the Generals to the Shenandoah District regular-season title and to a second-place finish at the district tournament.

With another year left, Wilkins said Good will grow from his state experience.

"I was real proud of him," Wilkins said. "He'll learn from this. If he gets the opportunity to go back next year, he'll have the chance to do even better. He did really well this year. There's nothing wrong with being in the top third [at the state tournament]."
