SU roundup: Hornets earn field hockey win
Daily Staff Reports - sports@nvdaily.com Shenandoah University wrapped up its 2012 Old Dominion Athletic Conference field hockey season Wednesday evening with a 3-2 victory over visiting Eastern Mennonite University. Shenandoah (10-7, 4-4 ODAC) ties Washington and Lee for fourth place in the league by downing the Royals (4-12, 3-5). Official pairings for the ODAC tournament will be released Thursday by the league, but SU is likely to face W&L in Lexington on Saturday at a time to be announced. Wednesday's contest was a back-and-forth affair, with Eastern Mennonite notching the game's first goal at the 48:20 mark. Freshman Tori Finney tied it for the Hornets at 61:55 before senior Amber VanHorn gave Shenandoah its first lead by converting an Alexandra Darrow penalty corner insertion at 63:17. The Royals were not finished, however, tying the game at 2-2 at 66:49. Exactly one minute later, freshman Sarah Brock scored the game-winner unassisted to give SU its 10th victory of the season. Shenandoah also successfully defended an Eastern Mennonite corner in the final 30 seconds to preserve the one-goal advantage. SU outshot its visitors 14-8 with Eastern Mennonite holding a 6-5 advantage in corners. Sarah Clare had three saves for the victors. Men's soccer Bridgewater 1, Shenandoah 0 BRIDGEWATER -- The Shenandoah University men's soccer team completed its inaugural ODAC season Wednesday afternoon with a 1-0 loss to Bridgewater College. Ryan Tavernaris scored the lone goal of the game for Bridgewater (10-7, 6-5 ODAC). The Eagles outshot SU (3-13-2, 1-9-1) 24-7 for the game, including 15-2 in the first half. Bridgewater also had an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks. Hornets keeper James Dutcher made six saves. The 2013 SU schedule will be announced in January.
