James Madison University senior guard Tarik Hislop scored 30 points to lead the Dukes (3-3) to a 63-58 win over Wichita State (2-4) in in the Cancun Challenge women's basketball tournament Saturday at Moon Palace Resort.
Hislop reached the 30-point mark for the second time in three games after scoring a career-high 32 in the Dukes' overtime win over Green Bay on Thursday. Also in double figures for JMU was redshirt senior guard Jasmine Gill, who had her first JMU double-double with 10 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
There were seven ties and 15 lead changes before JMU used a 13-4 run midway through the second half to take the lead for good. Hislop scored seven of those points, including a layup off a steal to cap the run and give JMU a 48-40 advantage with 7:38 left. Gill added four points during the stretch.
The Dukes pushed their lead to 11, 59-48, on a driving layup by senior forward Nikki Newman with 2:57 to play.
Miami (Ohio) jumped out to a quick 22-4 lead out of the gate and went on to defeat James Madison University, 76-58, in a non-conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Millett Hall.
MU improved to 3-2 while JMU fell to 1-4, all on the road or neutral.
The RedHawks used a quick 9-0 spurt in the first minute and a half as part of an overall 22-4 run in the opening eight minutes. JMU got as close as eight at 28-20 at the eight-minute mark but could not break double digits in the second half.
Reggie Johnson led Miami with 21 points on 7-for-11 shooting to lead four players in double figures. Jon Harris added 15 points and eight rebounds. Will Felder added 12 points and seven boards while Quinten Rollins had a double-double with 10 points, 10 assists and six rebounds.
Senior guard Devon Moore had a season-high 17 points, including 15 in the first half, to lead James Madison. Senior forward Rayshawn Goins added 14 points and seven boards. Freshman guard Ron Curry had a season high with 10 points.
After five straight away from home to open the season, the Dukes will play their home opener on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against George Washington.
