Eagles' late run buries Sherando

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. -- With the score knotted at 41 points apiece between the Sherando Warriors and the Hedgesville Eagles at the Miller Center Tuesday night, Ben Merica decided to take a full timeout with 3:15 remaining in the third quarter.

"We needed to run our 2-2-1 press correctly," Merica said of the timeout. "Coach Denny Fiery explained where they needed to be and getting into their spots.

"After coach Fiery addressed that, things started going well."

The Eagles went on a 14-2 run in the final minutes of the third and continued to push the lead in the final eight minutes to take a 74-52 victory.

The Eagles took an early 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter. Hedgesville used an 8-0 run to take a 10-3 lead, but Sherando responded with five points before Hedgesville called a 30-second timeout.

Following the timeout, the Eagles outscored the Warriors 13-5 to end the opening eight minutes.

Lauren Reed paced the Warriors in the second quarter, scoring 14 of her game-high 32 points to cut the Hedgesville lead in half going into the intermission.

"She shot the ball extremely well in the first half," Merica said of Reed. "She does a lot of good things and will continue to do so for that team."

Following the break, the Warriors got off to a fast start in the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles 12-7 before Merica called timeout.

Following the minute-long break. the Eagles found their spark.

Kelsey Shaw and Bianca Creamer, who each finished the game with eight points, made respective jump shots to give Hedgesville the lead and start a 14-2 run to take a 55-43 lead with a quarter remaining.

Alexis Taylor, who led the Eagles with eight rebounds, paced the Eagles in the fourth, scoring six of her 12 points in the quarter as they outscored the Warriors 19-9 in the final eight minutes.

Kristen Nunn led the Eagles (2-2) with 20 points and three assists.

Carly Elliott added 15 points and six rebounds for Hedgesville.

Heidi Brown added 12 points for the Warriors, and Jessica Hakel finished the contest with four points for Sherando (2-2).
