JMU roundup: Nation garners rookie honor

Daily Staff Report - sports@nvdaily.com

Three weeks of steady contributions from James Madison freshman guard Andre Nation have culminated in his first Rookie of the Week recognition from the Colonial Athletic Association.

Nation's impact has been felt in nearly every statistical category with steady play on both ends of the floor. Last week, he averaged 9.5 points, four rebounds, three steals, two assists and 1.5 blocks as JMU breezed past East Tennessee State 70-45 and fell in overtime against Richmond 83-82. His week was highlighted by a night with 11 points, five steals, three blocks, two assists and five boards against ETSU.

For the season, Nation ranks as JMU's second-leading scorer with 11.0 points per game. He is averaging 28.3 minutes per game and has started each of the last five contests for James Madison, which sits at 3-6 overall. His 2.6 steals per game leads the CAA and ranks 27th nationally while also putting him on pace for 82 steals for the season (JMU record is 63). He ranks third in the league with 1.6 blocks per game and has posted a 1.5 assist-to-turnover ratio thanks to just 11 turnovers in 255 minutes on the court. He is also shooting .447 from the field while sinking 12-of-33 attempts (.364) from the arc.

Nation and freshman teammates Ron Curry, Charles Cooke and Taylor Bessick have accounted for 33 percent of JMU's total offensive scoring this season and 38 percent of the total minutes played.
