JMU roundup: Soccer duo earns all-state honors

Daily Staff Report - sports@nvdaily.com

James Madison women's soccer players Becky Sparks and Lauren Wilson have been named to the 2012 VaSID All-State Women's Soccer Team.

Sparks, a junior defender, was selected to the all-state first team, while Wilson, a junior forward, was named to the second team.

Sparks and Wilson are both two-time All-Colonial Athletic Association honorees.

Wilson was JMU's leading scorer with eight goals, while Sparks contributed three assists and was part of a Dukes' defense that recorded five shutouts and a 1.46 goals-against average.

The team was selected by members of the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID).

Following Virginia's Atlantic Coast Conference championship and a run to the NCAA Tournament's round of 16, the Cavaliers took three of VaSID's top honors.

MAC Hermann Trophy finalist Caroline Miller was named Player of the Year, freshman Makenzy Doniak was selected Rookie of the Year and head coach Steve Swanson was voted Coach of the Year. Radford's Che' Brown was tabbed Defensive Player of the Year.

Miller, the 2012 ACC Offensive Player of the Year and the program's first Hermann finalist, set single-season school records with 20 goals and 47 points.

Doniak posted 10 goals and eight assists for 28 points.
