Central faculty set to play Harlem squad
By Jeff Nations
It's the Harlem Superstars against Woodstock's version of the "Dream Team" on Saturday night at Central High School.
A fundraiser for the school's athletic department, Saturday's exhibition basketball game features the Superstars, a traveling comedy basketball squad featuring former college and professional players, against a hand-picked group of school faculty and staff led by Central Principal Missy Hensley.
While there promises to be plenty of hijinks and shenanigans by the Harlem squad on the basketball court, the Central squad promises to have a little "game" come tip-off. Hensley, a former NCAA Division III All-American at Eastern Mennonite University, is just one of several Dream Teamers with collegiate basketball experience. Central girls basketball coach Mallory Skarupa and assistant Rachel Struble also suited up at the collegiate level, while the Hoover brothers -- Rowdy and Jared -- offer size and experience.
Then there's the edge in the coaching box -- Central football coach Mike Yew will guide the Dream Team.
"His knees might be worse than mine, so he's going to handle that for us," said Central athletic director Kenny Rinker, who won't be suiting up Saturday.
Rinker said the fundraiser is the first of its kind for Central, and he's already impressed with the Superstars' commitment. On Tuesday, the Harlem team had two players visit with students from W.W. Robinson Elementary School and Peter Muhlenberg Middle School, both to demonstrate their basketball skills and to deliver motivational messages to the kids.
Rinker is hoping for a good turnout on Saturday night. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tickets are $7 in advance or $8 at the door.
"It should be fun," Rinker said. "[The Superstars] are going to have their basketball acts and routines and they'll get the crowd into it."
