Senior Kimberly Helfrich placed 16th on the three-meter board and sophomore Alex Savage finished in 17th to highlight day one for the James Madison University diving team at the Tennessee Diving Invitational at Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center on Thursday.
Helfrich and Savage were two of four Madison divers to participate in the highly-competitive, three-day diving invitational. Helfrich scored a 263.05 to finish in 16th, 3.25 points ahead of Savage. Savage scored a 259.80 during Friday's preliminary round of 51 divers.
Freshman Carly Alexander claimed 34th, while fellow rookie Lauren Hadley finished in 44th. Alexander scored a 219.90. Hadley posted a score of 188.65.
Tennessee's Jodie McGroarty won the three-meter event with a score of 331.85. Her teammate Victoria Lamp claimed second (331.15) with LSU's Cassie Weil finishing third (312.20). Georgia's Laura Ryan (308.85) and Kentucky's Christa Cabot (305.20) were the only other divers to break 300 points, placing fourth and fifth, respectively.
JMU wraps up competition in the Tennessee Invitational on Friday with the one-meter dive event. Preliminaries are scheduled for a 10:30 a.m. start, with finals set to begin at 1:40 p.m.
