JMU roundup: Berger named to U.S. national lacrosse squad
Daily Staff Reports - firstname.lastname@example.org
Former James Madison lacrosse player Kelly Berger ('07) has been named to the U.S. national lacrosse team.
US Lacrosse Tuesday announced the 18-player U.S. National Team that is set to compete in the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup, July 11-20 in Oshawa, Ontario. The U.S. women's national team will look to defend its 2009 gold medal and earn its seventh overall world title.
The team was selected from a 25-player U.S. national training team roster, which was previously selected from a group of 38 players comprising the 2012-14 U.S. national team. Team USA most recently competed at the Jan. 25-27 Champion Challenge, a US Lacrosse event in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., where it compiled a 3-0 record against Northwestern University, Syracuse University and the English women's national team.
Berger, a four-year starter for the Dukes and two-time All-America selection, ranks second on JMU's career goals (184) and points (262) lists and fourth on the Dukes' career assist list (78). She was a member of U.S. Elite Team that competed in the 2008 Prague Cup.
More than 20 players from the JMU lacrosse program have been named to U.S. teams, but Berger is the first to be selected to the U.S. senior national team.
Team USA will reconvene for an exhibition against Team Canada at the 2013 US Lacrosse Women's National Tournament, May 24-26 at Lehigh University. After two training camps in Baltimore (June 26-July 2) and Buffalo, N.Y. (July 5-7), the team will travel to Oshawa for the World Cup.
