Prep roundup: MMA postgrads win in Big Apple
Daily Staff Reports - sports@nvdaily.com Massanutten Military Academy's top-ranked postgraduate boys basketball team picked up a 77-63 victory over Vermont Academy on Monday in the Big Apple Classic in New York City. Point guard Deandre Burnett, a University of Miami signee, scored a team-high 25 points to lead MMA (21-1). Frank Mason, a University of Kansas-bound point guard, chipped in 15 points for the Colonels. MMA still holds the top national ranking among prep schools on the web site recruitdirt.com. Boys basketball MMA 35, Chelsea Academy 14 WOODSTOCK -- Demetrius Brooks scored a game-high 12 points to lead Massanutten Military Academy to a 35-14 victory over Chelsea Academy in high school boys basketball action on Monday. Christian Johnston added 10 points and Chase McDevitt had eight for the Colonels, who improved to 4-3 with the victory. Tony Bergida scored five points to lead Chelsea Academy (1-7). Girls basketball Strasburg 47, Moorefield 41 Emily Melnikoff poured in a season-high 18 points to lead visiting Strasburg to a 47-41 victory over Moorefield (W.Va.) on Monday night. Kelsey Jenkins added a well-rounded effort for the Rams with eight points, six rebounds and four assists. Strasburg improved to 4-13 with the victory. Beth Cook scored 11 points to lead Moorefield.
