Prep roundup: Poston breaks 1,000-point scoring mark

MADISON -- Central's fourth-quarter comeback bid fell short against Bull Run District opponent Madison County, as the visiting Falcons lost 58-54 in girls basketball action on Monday.

Central trailed 49-39 entering the final period, but the Falcons were able to cut the final deficit to four points by outscoring the Mountaineers 15-9 over the final eight minutes.

"As a team we did not rebound the ball well tonight. That's what hurt us the most," Falcons coach Mallory Skarupa said. "And Madison is a very good shooting team."

Despite the loss, there was a bright spot for Central as junior Katelyn Poston topped 1,000 career points in the effort. Poston came into the game with 999 points and opened Monday's scoring with a 3-pointer to eclipse the mark.

Skarupa said Madison County officials paused the game and awarded Poston the game ball.

"[Poston] has kind of had that hanging over her head for the last few weeks, so I know she's glad she finally got it," Skarupa said. "She's an awesome offensive player. She's our go-to girl when we need a bucket.

"She deserves it."

Poston led the Falcons with 22 points, and senior Allison Bright chipped in 10 points for Central.

Chandler Gentry led Madison County with 17 points, and Cassity Lacy and Alexis Smith each added 10 points.

Luray 41, Stonewall Jackson 29

LURAY -- Junior guard Sable Ponn poured in a game-high 16 points to lead host Luray to a 41-29 victory over Stonewall Jackson in Shenandoah District girls basketball action on Monday night.

Rhea Jett scored 10 points to lead Stonewall Jackson (5-14, 2-9 Shenandoah).

Adrian Henry chipped in 12 points for Luray (12-7, 5-6).
