FRONT ROYAL - The host Skyline Hawks wrestling team beat Sherando, 44-27, then followed-up with a 54-22 win over Millbrook in a tri-meet on senior night to finish the Northwestern District regular season at 4-0, for the first winning district record in the school's six year history.

The match against the Warriors started at the 160 weight-class.

Seven bouts into the match, Justin Cornwell won a 7-3 decision over Mike Duffy in the 106-pound match, to give the Hawks their biggest lead, at 27-12.

The Warriors then got decisions at 113, by Curtis Guthridge, and at 120 by brother Jacob Guthridge, to close the gap to 27-18.

After Skyline's Noah Goss got an 18-3 technical fall over Justin Feigherty at 126, making if 32-18, the Warriors' Colton Simmons engaged in the only overtime bout of the evening, taking Garrett Meadows to the first 1:00 of extra time to earn a 4-2 decision, bringing the score to 32-21.

"That was my first overtime match of the year," Simmons, a sophomore, said. "I faced Goss at lot in the off-season, but not during the regular season. I wanted to change it up, because he was coming in agressive, so I wanted to push back, then I heard coach [Pepper Martin] yell 'sweep,' that's when I hit it and got the takedown."

Kyle Vangel continued the Sherando surge with at 45 second pin of Ron Lockhart in the 138 match, to narrow the gap to 38-27.

At 145, Skyline junior Josiah Huston pinned Jordan Dalton in 45 seconds, to expand the lead to 38-27, and clinch the team win for the Hawks.

Huston also pinned Millbrook's Kevin Becker, in 4:24, to improve his season record to 29-10.

"I just try to pin all my opponents," Huston said. "I had to work a little harder [against Becker] but I got it done in the end."

The Hawks' Dustin Santmyers tied the ribbon on the match by pinning Noah Fox at 152, in 2:27, to make the final score 44-27.

The match against Millbrook got underway with the 170-weight class, which Michael Keeler won, 8-1, over Alex Shaffer, to give the Pioneers their only lead, at 3-0.
Skyline picked up seven pins and a forfeit against Millbrook.

The Hawks pins were earned by Tristan Stone (182, in 1:03 versus Devon Sharpe), Zack Blair (195, 1:32 against Lee Artrip), Chris Gray (285, :18 over Gordy Greer), Goss (126, 1:04 over Isaac Meadosw), Caleb VanDoren (120, :46 over Josue Antonia) Huston, and Santmyers (152, :58 versus Brandon Valasquez).

The Pioneers got pins from Ryan Meushaw in the 106 bout, in 36 seconds over Justin Cornwell, and Matt Huff, at 138, in 1:18 against Aaron Lockhart.

"Millbrook, in the past, has really blown us out of the water," Skyline coach Matt Keel said. "This is a good victory. Overall, it's nice for the guys to see their hard work paying off.

"This is my sixth year coaching here, and it's the first year we haven't had a loosing season."

The Northwestern District tournament will be held at Sherando, January 30.
