The Shenandoah University baseball team is ranked No. 23 in the preseason poll released by D3baseball.com on Wednesday.
The Hornets received 100 points in the poll to come in just behind No. 22 St. Scholastica (Minn.). Wheaton (Mass.), the top-ranked team in the nation, received eight first-place votes and 594 points. St. Thomas (Minn.) is the No. 2 team in the country and two-time defending national champion Marietta (Ohio) is ranked third.
Shenandoah is the only school in the ODAC listed in the top 25. The Hornets open the 2013 season against Misercordia, a team that received top 25 consideration. Shenandoah's ODAC opener is March 3 at Roanoke College.
The Hornets are coming off a 31-13 season that included the team's fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Regionals.
Host Virginia Wesleyan used an early surge to top visiting Shenandoah University 84-51 in men's basketball action on Wednesday.
The Marlins (13-4, 9-0 ODAC) began the contest with a 13-2 run that put Shenandoah (3-15, 0-9) in an early hole. Virginia Wesleyan stretched the lead to double digits less than five minutes into the contest and held a 44-21 lead at halftime.
Sophomore Jared Carithers led the Hornets with 13 points, and Sharif Almulla added 11 points for Shenandoah.
D.J. Woodmore paced Virginia Wesleyan with 22 points, while Chris Astorga chipped in 16 for the Marlins.
Shenandoah returns to action on Saturday with a match-up against ODAC foe Randolph at 4 p.m.
