SU roundup: DH Nick Beall named preseason All-American

Daily staff reports -- sports@nvdaily.com

Shenandoah University senior designated hitter Nick Beall has been named a preseason All-American in selections announced Tuesday by D3baseball.com.

Beall is a two-time first-team All-USA South selection and was named to the first-team All-South Region by D3baseball.com last season. Last season, Beall hit .421 with 12 doubles, one triple, two home runs and 35 RBIs in 145 at-bats.

Beall's selection marks the fourth straight season that Shenandoah has had a player selected as a preseason All-American, as Greg Van Sickler (2010 and 2011), Kevin Brashears (2011) and Kyle Scallion (2012) also achieved the honor.

Women's basketball

Shenandoah University picked up a home victory over ODAC rival Bridgewater College on Wednesday, beating the visiting Eagles 72-66.

Freshman Imani Heggins led the Hornets, recording a career-high 19 points in the contest. Senior Nicole Gilbertson added 14 points for SU, 12 of which came in the second half. Holly Chittenden recorded her seventh double-double of the season for the Hornets, tallying 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Bridgewater's Jessica Mullen led all scorers with 28 points.

Shenandoah (7-9, 3-4 ODAC) plays again Saturday when it hosts Washington and Lee at 2 p.m.

Men's basketball

The Eagles (9-6, 3-3 ODAC) led 33-27 at halftime, but opened the second half on a 21-4 run to blow the game open.

Sophomore Jared Carithers led the Hornets with 16 points, and junior Bryce Mitchell added 15 points -- all in the first half -- for Shenandoah (3-13, 0-7 ODAC).

Kenneth Waugh led Bridgewater with 15 points, and Ronnie Thomas dropped 10 points for the Eagles.

Shenandoah will host Lynchburg on Saturday at 4 p.m.
