SU roundup: SU women win on road
Daily Staff Reports - email@example.com
Shenandoah University earned its second ODAC women's basketball victory of the season with a 67-64 win at Roanoke College on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Gabrielle Clarke gave SU (6-7, 2-2 ODAC) the lead for good with a layup at the 6:24 mark of the second.
Roanoke (4-8, 2-3), which found itself down by five points with two minutes remaining, cut the deficit to just two points with a steal and layup at the 13-second mark.
Senior Nicole Gilbertson hit one of two from the line with seven seconds remaining to push the advantage to three points before Holly Chittenden iced the contest by pulling down the rebound of the Gilbertson miss on the backend of the two-shot opportunity.
The win is the first-ever for the Hornets over the Lady Maroons and comes in the first meeting between the two schools since they met in the 2000 NCAA Tournament.
The game featured 16 lead changes and 14 ties, the last of which occurred as Crystal Petrus drained a pair of free throws at the 6:46 mark to tie the game at 58-58.
Roanoke missed the front end of a one-and-one on its ensuing possession with Chittenden grabbing the board to set up the possession for Clarke to give SU the lead for good.
Chittenden had her sixth double-double of the season with game-highs in points, 21, and rebounds, 12.
Petrus and Sara D'Amico backed her up with 12 points each.
The Lady Maroons had four players in double figures with Laurel Hankins leading this group with 14 points.
Shenandoah had a 42-40 advantage on the glass.
SU continues this road trip with a Tuesday ODAC contest at Randolph-Macon.
