Prep roundup: Smith wins state title

LYNCHBURG -- Sherando's Chris Smith won the Group AA indoor track and field state title in the high jump on Saturday at the state meet at Liberty University.

Smith's winning jump was 6-06. Smith also won the outdoor track and field high jump state title last spring.

The Warriors finished tied for 18th in the boys meet, which was won by Blacksburg.

Sherando's Nisha Moore placed seventh in the 500 meter-run for the Warriors' only points on the girls side. Tabb won the girls state title.

Postgraduate boys basketball

MMA 101, Believe Prep 97

WOODSTOCK -- Massanutten Military Academy's postgraduate boys basketball team picked up the First Bank Invitational tournament championship with a 101-97 victory over Believe Prep (S.C.) on Saturday at Central High School.

Frank Mason and Deandre Burnett poured in 28 points apiece to lead MMA (29-3).

National Prep Wrestling Championships

Randolph-Macon Academy's Imran Doraney and Duane Doku came up short in their pursuit of reaching Saturday's championship round at the National Prep Wrestling Championships in Bethlehem, Pa.

Doraney, wrestling in the 152-pound weight class, dropped his opener against eventual seventh-place finisher Ricky Regas of St. Thomas (Texas), who beat the R-MA senior by pin (1:49). Doraney regrouped in his second match, scoring a 9-3 decision over Brian Murphy from Forsyth CDS (N.C.), but was eliminated by Max Smith from MDAC (Md.), who scored a pin in 31 seconds.

Doku, competing in the 285-pound weight class, moved on with a forfeit victory over Hill (Pa.) wrestler Kostya Golobokov. Doku lost to Viktor Pedchenko of ANC (Pa.) by pin (2:30), then dropped a decision to Bishop Ireton's Jimmy Keegan via pin (1:44) in his final match.

Doraney and Doku combined for five points overall, helping R-MA tie for 86th in the team standings. Blair Academy (N.J.) won the team competition with 324.5 points, and Wyoming Seminary (Pa.) was the runner-up with 236.
