SU roundup: Hornets picked ninth in men's lacrosse poll

Daily Staff Report - sports@nvdaily.com

FOREST -- Shenandoah University is the preseason No. 9 selection of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's lacrosse coaches in the preseason poll results announced Friday afternoon by the conference office.

Shenandoah, in its first season of ODAC competition, has 19 points in the poll to come in just behind Randolph College for eighth place.

The WildCats have 21 points to secure the No. 8 position and SU is eight points clear of No. 10 Bridgewater.

Lynchburg is the preseason pick to win the league in 2013 -- the LC Hornets have 78 points and seven of a possible nine first-place votes.

Washington and Lee, on the strength one more first-place vote, is the No. 2 selection over Roanoke. The Generals had 71 points and two first-place votes, while the Maroons posted 70 points and the remaining first-place selection.

Points are awarded on a 1-9 basis and coaches cannot vote for their own teams in the poll.

SU, under the direction of second-year coach Mike Kruger, welcomes back senior midfielder Bryan Pope to lead the squad this season. Pope, an honorable mention All-CSAC pick last spring, led SU with 30 goals and 35 points along with 39 groundballs and six caused turnovers.

Kruger also returns starting goalkeeper Tyler Quinn (182 saves) and sophomore co-captain Eric Hobby as a short-stick midfield defenseman (32 groundballs, 11 caused turnovers).
