SU roundup: Marlins send Hornets packing in ODAC tourney

SALEM -- Third-seeded Virginia Wesleyan ended the Shenandoah University women's basketball season Thursday evening with a 60-47 win in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals at the Salem Civic Center.
Virginia Wesleyan (18-8) knocked down 12 3-pointers on its way to its third victory over the Hornets (12-15).
VWC also forced 21 turnovers that turned into 28 Marlins points.
After falling behind by 17 points after Virginia Wesleyan went on a 12-4 run from the 15:39 to 12:29 marks of the second, SU ripped off a 12-2 run of its own to cut the deficit to six points with 2:49 remaining.
VWC got a Brittany Glasco jumper on the ensuing trip down the floor, forced a turnover and then hit a 3-pointer to quickly push the advantage back into double digits.
Virginia Wesleyan then knocked down a pair of free throws to provide the final margin of victory.
Shenandoah, which had a 24-8 advantage in paint scoring, scored the initial four points of the contest and played the Marlins to within three points for the first 10 minutes of the contest.
VWC then pulled away with a 10-1 run in a span of just 1:43; the Marlins led by as many as 14 before taking a 33-22 lead into the halftime break.
Junior Crystal Petrus led SU with 16 points with sophomore Gabrielle Clarke adding 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
For Clarke, it is her first career double-double.
Senior Nicole Gilbertson had 10 points in her final collegiate game.
Kelly Jones had a game-high 18 points for the victors.
