Upcoming recreation classes and events


Frederick County Parks and Recreation

Contact the Frederick County Parks and Recreation Department at 540-665-5678 for information or to register for the following classes and events:

There will be an organizational team meeting at 6 p.m. March 13 at the Community Center at Evendale Elementary School, 220 Rosa Lane, Winchester, for a men's softball spring training ­- doubleheader league for ages 18 and up. Fee: $275 before March 7. Rosters due by registration deadline. Location: Sherando Park.

The 30 and over men's basketball league games will be played on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning March 19 at Gainesboro, Greenwood Mill, Orchard View and Evendale elementary schools. Maximum of 12 players per team. Team fees: $480 before March 3 or $530 between March 4 and March 10. Individual early bird registration fee is $50 before March 3. Final registration fee is $60 between March 4 and March 10.

Drop in for over 30 open gym basketball is held from 8 to 10 p.m. Thursdays at the community center at Greenwood Mill Elementary School, 281 Channing Drive, Winchester. Fee: $2.

Drop in for over 18 open gym basketball from 8 to 10 p.m. Wednesdays through April 10 at the community center at Gainesboro Elementary School, 5629 N. Frederick Pike, Gainesboro. Fee: $2.

Drop in for open Wallyball from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays at the Sherando racquetball courts. Fee: $2.

FITLIFE classes for ages 50 and up are held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the community center at Sherando High School. Fee: $28 for an eight-class punch pass. Instructor: Laura Hagenbuch.

Youth ballet classes for ages 6-8 will be held from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Thursdays from March 7-April 11 and for ages 9-11 from 7 to 7:45 p.m. March 7-April 11 at the community center at Sherando High Schools. Fee: $34 per session.

An adventure day that includes hiking, canoeing on Lake Culpeper and archery for ages 9-12 will be held from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the 4-H Center. Registration deadline: March 16. Register online at www.fcprd.net.

A drop-in quickstart tennis lesson for ages 4-11 will be held from 9:45 a.m. to 11 a.m. March 9 at the community center at Greenwood Mills Elementary School, 281 Channing Drive, Winchester. Fee: $7.

Shenandoah County Parks and Recreation

Contact the Shenandoah County Parks and Recreation Department at 540-459-6777 for information or to register for the following classes and events:

Zumba Gold classes for ages 55 and up will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Mondays beginning March 4 and ending March 25 or from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, March 6-27. Registration deadline: Feb. 25. Location: AnyTime Fitness next to the Food Lion in Woodstock. Fee: $29.

Gentle Hatha yoga classes for ages 55 and older will be held from 11:15 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays from March 6-27. Location: Shenandoah County Board of Supervisors meeting room in the County Government Center, Woodstock. Fee: $25.

Classes on the Meeks Method of SAFE exercise will be held for ages 55 and up from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. on Thursdays, March 28-May 2. Topics include body alignment, strengthening postural muscles to decrease risk of compression fracture, weight-bearing exercises, and avoiding harmful movements and exercises. Safe for those who want to return to exercise or with back pain issues. Registration deadline: March 22. Location: Physical Therapy Department at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital. Fee: $78.

Level 2 beginner line dancing classes for ages 10 and older will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, March 28-May 16. This is a step up from the ultra beginner class. Registration deadline: March 21. Location: Peter Muhlenberg Middle School gym in Woodstock. Fee: $38

Beginner-intermediate line dancing classes for all ages will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays, March 2-May 16. Registration deadline: March 21. location; Peter Muhlenberg Middle School gym. Fee: $38.

Join a caving adventure to Franklin, W.Va., from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. March 24. Lester Zook, Wild GUYde Adventures, will lead the expedition, which is for ages 10 and older. Registration deadline: March 11. Meet at Shenandoah County Government Center, Woodstock, to ride together to site.

Warren County Parks and Recreation

Contact the Warren County Warren County Community Center at 540-635-1021 for information or to register for the following classes:

A cardio kickboxing class will be held at 7 p.m. on Mondays from March 18-April 22 for ages 16 and over. Location: Warren County Health & Human Services Complex Cafe. Fee: $60.

Jazzercise classes for all ages are held at 5:15 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Location: Warren County Parks and Recreation Building. Information: Karen Hattenback, 540-538-7233 or khattenb@su.edu

Registration is open for summer softball leagues. Fees: Men's league, $400 per team. Women's league, $400 per team. Co-ed league, $350 per team. Registration deadline: March 29.

Tot tumbling classes for ages 4 and older will be held from noon to 12:45 p.m. and 6 to 6:40 p.m. on Mondays March 18-April 22. Location: Warren County Health & Human Services Complex Cafe. Fee: $60.

Shenandoah University

A mini-kickers soccer camp for ages 3-5 will be held this spring as a fundraiser for Shenandoah Women's Soccer. The camp is to introduce children to the game. Location: On the field behind the parking garage on Shenandoah University's main campus. Fee: $50 for six sessions. Session 1 will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. March 19, 21, 26, 28 and April 2 and 4. Session 2 will be held from 5-6 p.m. April 16, 18, 23, 25, 30 and May 2.
