SU roundup: Hornets knock off Lions

WINCHESTER -- The No. 13/27 Shenandoah University baseball team earned its fifth straight win Friday afternoon with an 8-3 non-conference victory over Penn State - Altoona.

Shenandoah (10-2) gave up two runs in the top of the first to the Lions (4-9), but answered with two of its own in the bottom of the frame.

After the two teams played a scoreless second and third, the Hornets took the lead for good on Daniel Freshley's RBI single in the fourth.

Freshley plated sophomore classmate Michael Paul, who had led off with a double.

SU then extended its lead with three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Paul had the big blow in the sixth with a two-run shot off the light pole in right.

Freshman Billy Arens (2-0) allowed three runs on eight hits and one walk in 6 1/3. With the bases loaded and one out in the top of the seventh, Shenandoah skipper Kevin Anderson turned to freshman Michael Scimanico, and the lefty delivered with a strikeout and a groundout to end the threat.

Arens struck out five and Scimanico three in 1 2/3 innings of work. Sophomore Matt Riegler worked a scoreless ninth.

Paul led the offense with a 3 for 4 afternoon that included three RBI and a run scored. Paul drove in the Hornets second run of the game in the first inning on a single to right.

Freshley and Corbin Lucas each added two hits.

Shenandoah returns to ODAC play on Sunday with a noon doubleheader against Hampden-Sydney.
