CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- The blazingly fast Immortal Eyes was sired in Florida by a stallion named Greatness, and on the track at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races he has more than lived up to his daddy's name.
In 10 starts at the West Virginia oval, the 8-year-old gelding has won nine times, seven in stakes races, with one second-place finish. On Saturday night, the star of the Robert Abbo Racing Stable will strut his stuff again as he attempts to win his third straight $50,000 Webb Snyder Charles Town Dash presented by Long Fence.
The 4 ½-furlong sprint, is one of five supporting stakes races on the undercard of the Grade 2, $1.5 million Charles Town Classic, one of the richest horse races in the country.
Immortal Eyes has earned $718,051 in his career and has shown no signs of slowing down. In his most recent outing, on February 12, he easily dominated the field in the St. Valentine's Day Handicap, closing at the perfect moment to win by a half-length under rider Travis Dunkelberger.
In 2011, Immortal Eyes set the Charles Town track record in the Webb Snyder, winning by 4 ¾ lengths in a time of 50.09 seconds. He returned last year to win the race again, 1 ¼ lengths in front of Yukon Wildcat in 50.71 seconds.
"He's pretty dominant at that track," said trainer Damon Dilodovico, who is based in Maryland. "We try to fit [Charles Town] into his schedule throughout the year. We definitely look there for events he's eligible for. He's been so good there, we feel like we'd be foolish not to."
Immortal Eyes will carry a high weight of 124 pounds in the Webb Snyder against a field of nine other runners.
Dilodovico also will saddle the remarkably versatile Regal Solo, who has won races from 5 ½ furlongs up to the 1 1/8-mile 2010 Maryland Million Classic.
Longtime Immortal Eyes rival Yukon Wildcat also will be in the field, having finished a close-up fourth in the St. Valentine's Day Handicap.
Fearsome, undefeated in two starts at Charles Town, enters having won five of his past seven starts, most recently an easy core over Yukon Wildcat in a conditioned allowance at the track, in which he ran 4 ½ furlongs in 50.87 seconds.
Completing the field are Vigors Storm, Jasizzle, Tomorrow's Tale, Tomac, Silver Summation, and Top Hawker.
