Prep roundup: Falcons lose close one at William Monroe

STANARDSVILLE -- Host William Monroe used a leadoff homerun by Austin Batten in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat Central 2-1 on Friday in Bull Run District baseball action.
The Falcons (8-3, 4-1 Bull Run) scored a run in the top of the first inning off Green Dragons starting pitcher Dustin Knight on an RBI single by Hayden Bauserman, but Central managed just one more hit over the remaining six innings.
William Monroe (10-0, 5-0) tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth before taking the lead on Batten's blast to open the sixth.
Falcons senior John Plunkett (5 1/3 innings pitched, two runs allowed, two strikeouts, four walks) took the loss, his first of the season.
The Falcons trailed 3-1 with 31 minutes left in the game, but Hamrick brought the team back with two goals over the next 18 minutes to send the match to overtime.
Tony Whetzel had an assist for the Falcons (3-3-1, 2-2-1 Bull Run). Central outshot William Monroe, 22-21.
