Prep roundup: Warriors' Whitacre hits for cycle in baseball win
Daily Staff Reports - firstname.lastname@example.org
NOKESVILLE -- Sherando High School's Adam Whitacre hit for the cycle against Kettle Run on Friday, and the sophomore needed just four innings to accomplish the feat in the Warriors' mercy rule-shortened 15-4 baseball victory.
Whitacre delivered a first-inning triple, then had a double and a three-run homer in the Warriors' 11-run third inning. Whitacre completed the rare feat with a single in the fourth inning, becoming only the second Sherando varsity baseball player to ever hit for the cycle. Matt McCarty was the other, having done it in 2004.
Whitacre finished his day by drawing a walk in the fifth inning.
Also for Sherando (6-0), Chase Smallwood was 3-for-4 with an RBI, Justin Angel went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and John Bentley was 1-for-3 with three RBIs.
Bentley started and went three innings for the win, striking out six while allowing just one earned run. Angel pitched the final two innings for the Warriors, fanning two while allowing a run.
Strasburg 9, Rappahannock County 4
STRASBURG -- Ashtyn Foddrell clubbed her fourth home run of the season to lead host Strasburg to a 9-4 softball victory over district rival Rappahannock County on Friday.
Foddrell was 3-for-4, including that two-run homer in the sixth, and drove in three runs for Strasburg (4-5, 2-1 Bull Run District).
"The girls stayed up throughout the entire game," Rams coach Suzanne Mathias said. "The didn't let a good hit by Rappahannock County bring them down and stayed up themselves."
Nicole Killen added a 2-for-4 night, and Carey Scott was 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two RBIs.
Scott also picked up the complete-game win, striking out nine while allowing six hits.
Kettle Run 2, Sherando 1
Host Sherando managed just two shots on goal against Kettle Run in Friday's non-district girls soccer loss, but one of them did go for a goal.
Down 1-0 at halftime, Sherando (2-2) tied the game when Katelyn Tuck scored an unassisted goal.
Kettle Run got the game-winning score with about 10 minutes to play.
The Cougars outshot Sherando, 10-2. Warriors goalkeeper Maribeth Watkins finished with eight saves.
Rappahannock County 2, Strasburg 1
STRASBURG -- Visiting Rappahannock County took advantage of two free kicks to down Strasburg in Bull Run District girls soccer action on Friday.
The Rams grabbed a 1-0 lead on Sarah Peer's goal off an assist from Danielle Fincham in the 15th minute, but the Panthers struck back in the second half.
Rappahannock County's Michelle White had both goals, with each coming on direct kicks.
The Panthers outshot the Rams, 12-8.
Goalkeeper Anna Sparacio had 10 saves for Strasburg (1-1-2, 1-2 Bull Run).
