BEALETON -- Warren County secured a spot in next week's Evergreen District softball tournament with a 4-1 road win over Liberty on Thursday night.
The Wildcats (10-9-1, 3-4-1 Evergreen) entered Thursday needing a win over the Eagles to reach the district tournament, and starting pitcher Paige McLachlan and a balanced Warren County offense ensured that happened.
McLachlan tossed all seven innings for the Wildcats, striking out six Liberty batters while allowing just one unearned run in the bottom of the third. The sophomore scattered eight Liberty hits in the outing.
"She just finds ways to get out of trouble," Wildcats coach Justin Stock said.
Warren County managed seven hits from seven different players in the game. Junior Cassie Green broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the sixth with an RBI on a sacrifice fly, and McLachlan followed with an RBI double to give the Wildcats a two-run cushion. Warren County added another run in the top of the seventh to help secure the win.
The Wildcats will have to wait and see whether they will be the third or fourth seed in next Monday's tournament. Kettle Run and Brentsville play tonight, and Warren County will claim the third spot with a Brentsville victory.
