Prep roundup: Warriors slug their way past Hawks

Daily Staff Reports -- sports@nvdaily.com

STEPHENS CITY -- Host Sherando capped off a perfect regular season in Northwestern District play with a 10-0 win over Skyline on Wednesday night in a game that ended in six innings via the mercy rule.

The visiting Hawks had no answer for Warriors starting pitcher Reid Entsminger, who tossed all six innings for Sherando while allowing just one hit and striking out five. Skyline's lone hit came on an infield single by Nick Helmick in the top of the second inning.

Sherando had no such trouble at the plate, as the Warriors banged out 12 hits, including six for extra bases. Chase Smallwood led the charge with a 3-for-4 day, and the junior was a home run away from the cycle while tallying four RBIs.

Senior Jacob Carney was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs, and Carney's single in the first inning was his 111th career hit, a new school record. Matt McCarty -- who graduated from Sherando in 2006 -- previously held the record of 110.

Manassas Park 9, Central 1
MANASSAS -- Visiting Central suffered from some sloppy defensive play as the Falcons fell to Manassas Park, 9-1, in Bull Run District baseball action on Wednesday.

The Falcons (13-6, 9-5 Bull Run) committed four errors in the game and lost a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth as the Cougars struck for four runs to take control. Central managed eight hits against Manassas Park starter Chris Hoffa, with Brady Baker leading the way with two singles.

The loss drops Central to the No. 3 seed in next week's Bull Run District tournament.
