Prep roundup: Wildcats upset top-seeded Falcons

Daily Staff Reports -- sports@nvdaily.com

WARRENTON -- Fourth-seeded Warren County upset top-seeded Fauquier, 3-0, in the Evergreen District softball tournament semifinal match-up on Monday evening.

Wildcats sophomore pitcher Paige McLachlan fired a complete game while allowing just two hits in the shutout victory. McLachlan (four strikeouts, one walk) was perfect through 4 1/3 innings before a Fauquier double in the fifth. Warren County backed McLachlan with solid defensive play, recording 13 defensive assists and committing no errors in the win.

"That was probably the best game defensively that we've played all year," Warren County coach Justin Stock said.

The Wildcats (12-9-1) scored a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI double by junior Cassie Green (2-for-3, RBI), and Warren County also added runs in the third and seventh innings.

Warren County will travel to Kettle Run on Wednesday for the district championship game, which starts at 6:30 p.m. It will be the last game in the Evergreen District for the Wildcats.

"Hopefully we can make it a memorable one," Stock said.

George Mason 3, Central 2
WOODSTOCK -- Third-seeded Central fell to No. 6 George Mason, 3-2, in eight innings in Monday's Bull Run District baseball tournament quarterfinals.

The Falcons (13-8) tied the game at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Mustangs sent two runs across the plate in the top of the eighth to secure the win. Central couldn't complete the comeback but did manage a run in the bottom of the eighth.

Junior Hayden Bauserman pitched 7 2/3 innings for Central, allowing six hits while striking out eight George Mason batters.

"He threw well, they just got timely hits," Falcons coach Donn Foltz said.

Sophomore Cody Sager was 2-for-4 at the plate for the Falcons, and John Plunkett and Zach Herbaugh also had hits for Central.

Foltz said it is unclear whether or not Central will advance to the Region B tournament, but the Falcons' chances took a big hit with Monday's loss.
