WINCHESTER -- The Shenandoah University women's cross country team has earned the athletic department's highest team GPA for the spring 2013 semester in grades announced Thursday by the department.
The women harriers, under the direction of Andy Marrocco, achieved a collective 3.43 GPA on a 4.0 scale this past semester.
Five of the seven women on Marrocco's squad earned better than a 3.2 GPA and all seven were at least 2.9.
This is the third straight semester that the squad has paced the department academically.
Women's cross country was one of 10 teams (out of 20 total) to have better than a 3.0 team GPA. Eight of the 10 women's teams had at least a 3.0 GPA with golf leading the men's programs at 3.21.
Two more programs: baseball and volleyball, posted at least a 2.85 GPA.
Eighteen of the 20 intercollegiate programs had better than a 2.5 cumulative average.
As a whole this past semester, student-athletes earned a 2.89 cumulative average with the women improving by .01 compared to the spring 2012 semester to post a 3.16.
Nine of the 20 programs have a career GPA of at least 3.0 and 19 of 20 are at 2.5 or above.
